The 50th Anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is an icon renowned around the world. For decades it has inspired millions as a gateway to our country and been a symbol of the American Dream. Yet, when the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge arrived, the event to commemorate the celebration was in serious jeopardy. With the anniversary less than eight weeks away, the organizers had no sponsorship and virtually no public support for their effort. In a few weeks we organized a coalition of local politicians, celebrities like Tony Bennett, Mayor Diane Feinstein, the Hearst Corporation, and nine national corporate sponsors. On Sunday, May 24, 1987, the event that seemed doomed for failure, was a resounding success as the Golden Gate Bridge literally swayed in celebration with over a million people on it. An important date in history had been appropriately commemorated honoring one of our country’s treasured landmarks.
